The inspiration for Louvre light came from the designer's desire to capture the image of a Greek summer morning. The sunlight passing easily through closed shutters and louvres, the big sun, endless blue sea, clean sand, and transparent water all served as the foundation for this captivating design. The rings of plexiglass and cork in Louvre light represent the louvres, translating the essence of Greek summer into an object.
What sets Louvre light apart is its ability to cast no shadows on itself or the surfaces around it. The light passes through the material, causing diffusion that creates a soft and inviting glow. By simply changing the order of the rings, users can customize the diffusion, volume, and overall aesthetic of the light. This playful process allows for endless combinations and total control over the lighting experience.
The realization of Louvre light involved cutting rings of plexiglass using a laser cutter machine. Half of these rings underwent a sandblasting process to achieve the desired level of diffusion. The cork rings were cut using a CNC machine. To ensure safety and prevent heat, an LED lamp was used in the design.
Technical specifications of Louvre light include a height of 220mm, a base diameter of 180mm, a ring diameter of 140mm, and an inside diameter of 70mm. The lamp weighs 2.6 kg and consists of 6 cork rings and 14 plexiglass rings.
Interacting with Louvre light is a delightful experience. By changing the order of the rings, users can transform the diffusion, volume, and overall aesthetic of the light. This safe and playful activity allows individuals to feel a sense of ownership and creativity as they construct their personalized lighting experience.
The Louvre light project began in May 2013 and was completed at the end of June 2013. It was exhibited in the Greek Design Good Design exposition in Athens from November 28 to December 2, 2013, as part of an effort to promote Greek design abroad.
Louvre light received the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2014. This award recognizes the lamp's outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. With its remarkable level of excellence, Louvre light introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder to any space.
Louvre light is not just a table lamp; it is a work of art that brings the beauty of Greek summer sunlight into your home. Its interactive design, endless customization options, and captivating diffusion make it a truly unique and remarkable piece.
